An exciting innovation of our 2012 programme at Rutherford College is the introduction of a wide range of family-friendly courses. These are designed for a parent or caregiver accompanied by a child or children 13 years or older. There are so many advantages to learning in this way. Your family bonds are strengthened by studying together, and your learning is reinforced as you discuss and review the new material between classes. Children are introduced early to the merits of life-long learning and given the opportunity to try learning styles that might differ from those used at day school. As Dr. Phil says, the most powerful role model in any child’s life is the same-sex parent, and being engaged with your child’s learning can really help you find common ground during the difficult teenage years..jpg)
Flicking though the 2012 booklet you’ll easily spot the little ‘family’ motif that helps you identify these courses, and they can be found in each subject area of our Adult Education curriculum. There are hands-on crafty courses like Jewellery Making, Maori Carving, Mosaics, Pottery and Slip Casting, or Sewing. For active families who love the beach Sculpt ‘n’ Stretch, NZ Day Skipper or Surfing will appeal, while others will enjoy CAD, Design your Own Website, Photoshop or Web Programming.
There’s nothing more family-friendly than sitting down to a good meal together, especially one you’ve prepared yourselves. Get your Blokes in the Kitchen to start Baking home-made Favourites or Breads and Dips, and after your kids have done Cooking with Kids for Kids you can turn them onto Healthy Family Cooking and Vegetarian Cooking. Once you’ve aced those you could do the Food Hygiene Certificate together and open a family restaurant!
So whether your interests run to languages: Mandarin, Samoan, Te Reo Maori, English for Pasifika Families; personal appearance: Soap Making, Hair Styling, Makeup for Mums and Daughters; or gardening: Caring for Herbs, Gardening Basics, The Edible Garden; with all your old favourites, 37 brand new courses, a Teen Programme, a comprehensive ESOL selection and our Family Programme, there really is something for everyone.
